Classic Cuts

One of the things that we didn’t appreciate at the time was how bloody lucky we were to have carte blanche with the cartoons. The editor would only see the cartoon hours before the presses starting rolling so there was no time for him to start making changes other than editing with Tipp-Ex. I’d write the text several days before the deadline and then dictate it to Nev over the telephone (he lived hundreds of miles away). Nev usually drew the cartoon the day before the deadline, that meant he had to post it Special Delivery to ensure it got to the Sounds office on time. The first I’d get to see the cartoon was when I went into the newsagents and opened the inside back page of Sounds to see what Nev had come up with. He rarely disappointed.
